What is a lift chair?

A lift chair is a powered recliner that assists the user with getting into and out of the seated position. Also referred to as power lift chairs, power recliners, medical recliners, electric lift chairs, and other names, lift chairs are operated via a remote control to provide you with seating assistance at the touch of a button. Designed for anyone with mobility challenges or limitations power recliners can be highly beneficial to those who have trouble sitting down or getting up out of their favorite chair due to arthritis, surgery, aging, back pain, pregnancy, injury, or joint pain.

How can an electric recliner help me?

Lift chairs help to improve the mobility independence of their users. The assistance of a caregiver or loved one is not necessary thanks to a lift chair. Being able to sit and stand as you please is something most of us take for granted but for those with mobility issues, this can become a challenge or in some cases not possible. Power lift chairs can help give that freedom back with the simple push of a button.

A great benefit of lift chairs is that they reduce the risk of injury. With some mobility limitations getting into and out of a chair might not be so simple and easy. Moving too quickly, loss of balance or strength, or just moving in a certain way can leave some of us at risk for injury. Lift chairs reassure the user and their loved ones that they will be able to sit and stand with support, giving them more control and balance.

Power lift chairs are made to be comfortable and for ease of use. Typically more spacious than regular non-powered recliners, lift chairs are often more comfortable than their traditionally designed cousins. Electric lift chair remotes are easy to understand and even easier to use. Even if you have never used a lift chair before, the intelligently designed remote control lets you dial in the comfort with almost no effort.

Lift chairs offer many benefits, such as stress reduction, pain relief, spinal support, and all-around comfort. When you want to wind down at the end of the day, lift chairs will help you ease into your evening, putting your body in a calm state of relaxation and getting you ready for a good night's sleep.

Lift recliners are not only functional pieces of furniture, they are also stylish and can be customized to fit any home’s decor. Most lift chairs will feature some standard free fabric options as well upgraded and premium fabric options available at an additional cost.

Ultimately, lift chairs are designed to make life easier. And for people with pain or limited mobility, they really do.

Lift Chair Specifications to Consider

•Distance From Wall - This is a measurement of the required amount of space from the nearest wall for the power lift chair to fully recline. You should also take into account the length of the footrest when extended in case there are tables or other objects in front of your power recliner.

•Seat Dimensions - These are the dimensions of the seat cushion itself. Seat width refers to the interior distance from one arm of the lift chair to the other. Seat depth is the distance from the front edge of the lift chair’s seat to the backrest. Some manufacturers will include additional measurements such as the height of the backrest from the top of the seat and the distance from the floor to the top of the seat.

•Overall Lift Chair Dimensions - The full length, width, and height of the lift chair. When referring to the overall dimensions of lift chairs length and depth are sometimes used interchangeably; this measurement is from the front edge of the medical recliner to the back of the chair. Lift chair width is the space from the outside of one of the lift recliner’s arms to the outside of the other. Height is the distance from the lift chair’s bottom to the highest point of the headrest.

•Weight Capacity - This is the highest amount of weight your electric lift chair can safely accommodate.

•Lift Chair Positions - This refers to the types of positions different lift chairs are able to reach. Read more below for an explanation of the different lift chair positions available.

•Additional Features and Accessories - Some lift chairs offer heat and massage options to soothe aching muscles and reduce stress. Accessories are available for certain power recliners.

Types of Lift Chairs

Choosing a lift chair for the first time can be a little challenging. There are so many lift chairs available it can be hard to know which one is right for you. Power lift chairs are typically divided by which positions they can reach. All lift chairs are capable of the standard seated position and the lifted position to assist with standing up and sitting down. This lift chair position guide will explain what the different positions are, their benefits, and their uses, to help you decide on the perfect electric lift chair for you.

Lift Chair Positions

We divide lift chairs into categories based on the positions they can reach. However, certain lift chairs may overlap into multiple categories, similar to how mobility scooters and power wheelchairs can. For example, some manufacturers may refer to their chair as a Zero Gravity position lift chair but it can also achieve the Trendelenburg position, which could technically make it an Infinite Position lift chair as well. To help clear up any confusion our product pages contain detailed information regarding the capabilities of each power lift chair. If you have questions about a specific lift chair please call us at 1-888-364-3813 or fill out our contact form here and we will be happy to help you.

3 Position Lift Chairs

The term three position lift chair refers to the number of positions that a chair can reach in addition to the default sitting position. The first of these is the lifted position, where the chair raises up and leans forward slightly to allow the user to sit down and stand up with less effort. The second position is a partial recline, sometimes referred to as the reading or TV position. In the partial recline the head and backrest lean slightly backwards while the legrests raise partially. In full recline, the third position, the back and legrests extend further for an even more relaxing experience. The full recline position is great for grabbing a quick nap to recharge your batteries.

3 Position Lift Chair Features:

•Positions: Lift, Semi-Recline, Full Recline

•Perfect for relaxing or napping

•Back and leg rest operate simultaneously

•Typically more affordable than other lift chair types

Trendelenburg Position Lift Chairs

The Trendelenburg Position, named after German surgeon Friedrich Trendelenburg, refers to a position in which a person’s feet are elevated above the heart, and the heart is elevated slightly above the head, while in a lying down position. Trendelenburg lift chairs achieve this position through the use of two independent motors located in the footrest and backrest. Trendelenburg position lift recliners offer unique benefits to their users, such as improved circulation and reduced neck and back pain. These electric recliners are perfect for full-time use and a great choice if you will be sitting for extended periods or sleeping in your lift chair.

Trendelenburg Position Power Recliner Features:

•Positions: Lift, Semi-Recline, Full Recline, TV Watching, Sleeping, Trendelenburg

Zero Gravity Position Lift Chairs

Zero Gravity Position Lift Chairs place you in a completely neutral position by evenly distributing your weight throughout your body. Initially discovered by NASA as a way to reduce pressure felt by astronauts during take-off, this ultra-comfortable lift recliner position also has several health benefits. The zero gravity lift chair position can reduce pressure on the heart, lungs, back, and joints. Zero gravity power lift chairs can even reduce swelling and edema, alleviate acid reflux, and improve circulation. These incredibly comfortable lift chairs promote relaxation and are ideal for anyone that may be sitting for extended lengths of time or sleeping in their lift chair.

Zero Gravity Position Medical Recliner Features

Infinite Position Lift Chairs

Infinite position lift recliners offer a greater variety of positions than the 3 position chairs. In addition to the lifted, partially reclined, and fully reclined positions, infinite lift chairs can recline even further to the nearly flat sleeping position and anywhere in between. Infinite position chairs are able to achieve such a wide range of motion through the use of two separate motors, one in the back and one in leg rest. These two motors operate independent of each other, allowing you to adjust the upper and lower sections of the chair individually so that you can dial in the perfect position. Certain infinite position lift chairs can also achieve the Trendelenburg position, where the feet are raised at a slightly higher angle than the head or the Zero Gravity position developed by NASA which places the body in the most neutral position.

Infinite Position Lift Chair Features:

•Positions: Lift, Semi-Recline, Full Recline, TV Watching, Sleeping, Trendelenburg, Zero Gravity

•Dual motors operate the back and leg rest independently

•Allows for custom positions

Common Questions About Lift Chairs

What is the difference between a lift chair and a regular recliner?

The difference is their intended use. The standard recliner that you will find at a furniture store is made to be used by the general population, who are not experiencing mobility challenges, with a focus on comfort and looks. Lift chairs on the other hand are specifically designed to aid individuals who have mobility impairments, while also providing the most comfortable experience possible and featuring stylish fabric options that will match any decor. Lift recliners are also known for the wider range of positions they can reach. Many of our chairs are designated by the FDA as Class 2 Medical Devices. In short, a power lift chair offers all the features of a regular recliner and much more!
